Re: vCenter Server 6.5 for Windows OR VCSA 6.5?

$

No, I would not say that VCSA 6.5 does not support Horizon View, it is more about the database setup.  VCSA uses an internal database to store inventory information.  Horizon View needs to connect to an external SQL database to store event information and Composer (part of the view deployment) needs to create a coposer database as well on and external SQL database.  These components of Horizon view currently have no capability to create their own internal database (postgre or otherwise) the way that VCSA does.  You may be able to connect them to the postgre database but I have seen that supported or done anywhere.

So if you have a Horizon View deployment you already have the requirement of an external database, windows sql or oracle.   Since you already have one in your environment, deploying the VCSA doesn't save you the trouble of setting one up.

I hope that explains my position.

The tool you are advertising may be useful for the Workstation platform. It is not able to help for ESXi.

Did you use all your physical disks to expand datastore1 ?
Thats is IMHO a very bad idea.

Anyway - check if all your physical disks still have a valid partitiontable using the tool partedUtil

I am having the same problem and I was able to create a temporary workaround, which can be run by the user having the issue.

I created script that deletes the following folders...

%userprofile%\appdata\local\packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy

%userprofile%\appdata\local\packages\Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy

%userprofile%\appdata\local\packages\windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy

Then run the following Powershell commands

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\AppxManifest.xml"

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "C:\Windows\SystemApps\ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml"

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml"

It's worth noting that the folder deletion sometimes fails so make sure all running apps are closed. In my case, Chrome was the cause.

Hi Jürgen
This sounds very strange - can you please attach all the vmware*.logs from the Test-Linux directory to your next reply ?

looking at the VMware compatibility guide here it would seem that 10.12 is a supported OS,  Apple licencing restrictions notwithstanding regarding Apple hardware.

Re: Regarding ISCSI multipath

When you have 2 subnets for iscsi, create one port group with 1 vmkernel port and 1 physical nic for 1 of the subnets. Create a 2nd switch with another vmkernel port and physical nic for the 2nd subnet.

On the software iscsi initiator, add the IP addresses of your iSCSI storage in the discovery tab. Do NOT add any of the vmk ports to the port binding section. In esxtop you should see traffic coming out both vmkernel ports and both nics.

In ESXi 6.5 there's a new option to allow routing for iscsi if that helps. See here: Best Practices for Configuring Networking with Software iSCSI

So you can try with something like the following picture. Depending on how you will decide whether the execution has succeeded or not, you can use one of the three available Decision elements (Decision, Custom decision, or Decision activity) for Check Status item.

Have you checked the vmkernel.log on the host to identify any issues with connectivity to the RDMs?

Also do you have the RDS's setup as described in the Setup for Failover Clustering documentation? https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-60-setup-mscs.pdf

What could be the cause of the delay is that the RDMs used for MSCS are not set to perennialy reserved. During a LUN scan the ESX host tries to claim all the available LUNs presented to the host. If the LUN cannot be claimed because the LUN is already claimed this action can take a very long time. ESXi/ESX hosts with visibility to RDM LUNs being used by MSCS nodes with RDMs may take a long time to start or during LU…

Failed to start the (P2V) VM on ESXi server

Hi.

1) I've virtualized (P2V) a physical Windows server 2003 machine by means VMWare Converter.

Then I've tried to import it and run in VMWare Workstation12 and all works without issue.

(with exception of this - skippable - error:

2) Than I've changed hardware compatibilty by means VM > Manage:

2017-04-10_183940.png

so that the VM will be compatible wirh my ESXi 5.1 server

3) At this pont I've copied all VM's file to the ESXi 5.1 datastore

4) Then I've tried to start the copied VM on the ESXi 5.1 server but this error (not skippaple) is showed on the screen and I can't start the VM on the ESXi 5.1 server

Any idea?

Thanks in advance

Interact with VM Console via Script

Hi Experts,

I know that there is PLink which allows to use command line to SSH.

I also know there is Invoke-Script which allows you to run a script inside of the VM.

The issue with both of these for my needs is that the VM is question does not have Tools installed (cannot presumably) and is not SSH'able. (Linux VM)

Is there a way for me to interact with the VM other than these two methods? Ideally the VM would not need to be networked prior and I can connect to something like a console via script where I can manipulate inside the guest.

Thank you for any suggestions if its even possible

Unkown connection error

I recently set up Hypervisor 6.5 on an external hard drive and downloaded the most recent vsphere client. I am getting this message whenever I try connecting to the address I had set up in the options menu.

I know next to nothing about virtualization and this is my first attempt at using vmware as I am trying to set up my own lab so that I can learn to use vmware and maybe install an evaluation copy of windows server 2012 to learn how to use Active Directory.

I have made sure that I am using the correct host name and ip address when trying to log in from the client and made sure the ESX host had network connectivity so I am not sure what else I can do. Please help

Can I have failover and data mirroring/backup capabilities with 2 ESXi 6.5 hosts and each having local storage only?

$

I'm looking at deploying 2 ESXi 6.5 servers (ProLiant DL380 Gen9) with locally attached storage.

My questions are:

- Can I configure the 2 hosts, so that If 1 node goes down the other node will run all the vm's until the other node is brought back online?

- Can I have the 2 nodes backup or mirror each other's local storage, so I don't need to introduce a separate backup solution?

Without shared storage between the hosts it is only possible to provide an a-synchronous storage replication between the local datastores with for example vSphere Replication.

This will provide you with a copy of the VM data on the other local datastore. If for some reason the host running the VM fails, you will have to manually start the VM on the remaining host.

Because vSphere Replication is a-synchronous the data of the VM will not be real-time depending in the configured RPO time. For more information about vSphere Replication, VMware vSphere Replication 6.5 Documentation Center

Is anyone using AppVolumes 3 yet?

Hello,

We are deploying a new Horizon environment on View 7.1.0.  We will be deploying on all-flash vSAN and want to utilize AppVolumes on top of non-persistent linked-clones to publish some specialized software for specific users.  I just installed and deployed AppVolumes 3 and it looks much different than the book I read about AppVolumes 2 (Learning VMware App Volumes from PACKT Publishing.)  So my question is, is anyone using version 3 yet, or would we be better off deploying on the latest version of 2.x?  I can't find a lot of documentation about 3 so already having some issues with my first package (it shows all kinds of launch points for Visio 2013 instead of just the EXE for the program itself.)  Thanks so much!

I think it's a bit unfair to pay for the support cost for 3 years. Avamar isn't cheap, so I think a lot of people are going to be upset about this.
